You have a blog and now you’re wondering how to make money from it.

Will you get rich if companies post their ads on your page? Will you get “discovered” simply because you post cool content

Good theories but it takes more than these concepts to get paid. It also takes networking, hard work and a strategic plan for your blog, according to blogging expert Javacia Harris Bowser of See Jane Write Birmingham. She led a workshop today on how to go from lady blogger to boss lady. For the next seven days, I will highlight one of her tips. Today’s tip: Get Serious.

Get Serious

Treat your blog like a business. Meet with a business attorney about your business plans. Create an LLC. Consult with an accountant on what type taxes you will need to pay if you are paid for services, you do for freelancing, public speaking engagements, selling products, etc.

Make your website look like you mean business. If you want people to take you seriously, you have to take yourself seriously. Look the part to get the role. Javacia’s See Jane Write Birmingham website was already a good looking site. But when she upgraded it last year, it got noticed even more.

Get business cards. Invest in quality business cards so that when you attend events, you can leave a good impression with those you meet. Be sure your phone number, website and social media links work. You set a bad impression with the person if they try to contact you with info from your card and they can’t.

Stop telling yourself that you’ll get cards one day and that you “can get by” until you do. It won’t work. Don’t write your url on the back of a napkin and hand it to someone at a networking event. “You are a boss lady. That’s raggedy,” Javacia says. “Boss ladies don’t do that.”

Get educated. Attend seminars or workshops that address topics of interest or things you cover on your blog. Seek help for areas you want to improve yourself and your blog.

Come back tomorrow for Tip 2 on to go from lady blogger to boss lady: Get Creative.
